Census of Athlete Rights Experiences. Report 2021.

The World Players Association provided insightful statistics for my research. Overwhelming numbers referring to abuse of athletes of all ages prove that new regulations (for example, the UNESCO & UN Women handbook) are required for the safety of these athletes. The stories that the research participants have told were heartbreaking and highlighted the imbalance of gender amongst the coaches and the management, leading to athletes not being able to speak up, feeling threatened and not heard. Some say that they knew nothing would be done, and they will be punished for trying to come forward.

It is crutial for my research to know the context of what is happening, how elite athlets feel, and the issues they face. Especially, sexual abuse that they face due to the industry being dominated by men. This will be used as context in the zine highliting how women and girls face discrimination and the harder path they have to face, in order to be an elite sportsperson. The statistics will be used as an example and explanation. As well as some quotes mention the higher beauty standard that women have to keep up with, which will be highlighted in the locker room part of the installation.
