Millie Bright, serial silverware winner, signs off with a legacy few will match, The Guardian.
I used this article to provide context for the zine’s ‘Daily Mail’ article being edited. Comments under the Daily Mail article underestimate the significance of Millie Bright, and The Daily Mail is not helping with highlighting her impact in sport. A quote from The Guardian will be used to expand on the explanation of her importance. According to Guardian, Wiegman said it is “hard to put into words the impact she has had”, adding: “Winning Euro 2022 and captaining England to

Brighton explain unfair reason behind plans for Europe’s first purpose-built £80m women’s stadium, TalkSport.
This article explains the reasoning behind the new football stadium being built in Brighton for the women's team. I will use this explanation to edit the article that will be used in the zine (see project stage #9). As the article in the zine does not explain the reason for a build, it is necessary to expand on it. Especially with the amount of negative comments following the article, as people assumed the only difference was more breastfeeding spaces, because The Daily Mail

Which soccer players have the most international goals of all time?
This article emphesises the missconception that happens when someone looks up most international goals scored, Google shows only men's statistics, missing out the actual record holders. These statistics are very helpful and are applied in the article on this topic. (See project stage #9, Most football goals scored on international arena).

Why women's basketball still fights for equal recognition.
The articel emphesizes the inequality of funding and support that women's and men's teams get in the same league. It describes a situation during the COVID-19 lockdown, when the teams were moved to separate facilities that were not achieving the same standard. It was explained by the lack of space. However, the men's team was prioritised. Another evnt that is brought us is when a men's team that haven't won a championship in years got their whole facility renovated. But the s

Sportswomen share experiences of sexism and the reasons they do not report it. Becky Grey
Almost two-thirds of elite British female athletes have experienced sexism in sport, but the vast majority did not feel able to report it. In the BBC Elite British Sportswomen's survey, 65% of respondents had suffered sexism, but only 10% reported it. The figures have worsened over the past five years since the last survey was carried out. In 2015, 41% had suffered sexism, with 7% reporting it. This survey is showing the gender paygap in sports, as well as the gap in respect

Census of Athlete Rights Experiences. Report 2021.
The World Players Association provided insightful statistics for my research. Overwhelming numbers referring to abuse of athletes of all ages prove that new regulations (for example, the UNESCO & UN Women handbook) are required for the safety of these athletes. The stories that the research participants have told were heartbreaking and highlighted the imbalance of gender amongst the coaches and the management, leading to athletes not being able to speak up, feeling threatened

Women and Joirnalism. Deborah Chambers, Linda Steiner, Carole Fleming. 2004.
I stumbled upon this book in the university library and thought it would be perfect for researching sexism in the journalism field. It had a sports journalism section which described reinforced stereotypes and abuses women faced in the field, especially in a field that is perceived as masculine, such as sports. The main flaws have been known to me from other readings I did. However, there were some insights that I read in this book for the first time. For example, how men use

Evaluation in the news: A methodological framework for analysing evaluative language in journalism. Monika Bednarek (2010), pp. 15-50.
This text was discovered while writing the interim report. As the title says, it is a methodology for analysing eveluative language in journalism, which perfectly fits the premis of the project. Monica Bednarek highlighted 12 evaluative parameters, and I have used them while choosing and analysing articles to use in the zine. This methodology is very useful, as I learned how to differentiate and quickly define evaluative language within the articles. It was used at the beginn

Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls in Sport. unesco, UN WOMEN
This handbook is addressed primarily to policymakers and sports practitioners, as well as sports journalists and civil society organisations who want to do more to ensure that women and girls across all social groups can practice sports safely. " Many of the root causes of violence against women and girls in sport directly reflect the causes of gender-based violence in our societies at large: gender inequality, discrimination and harmful socio-cultural norms." The handbook pr

Guerrilla Girls
Guerrilla Girls is a group of artists who have created provocative pieces and guerrilla campaigns exposing sexual and racial discrimination in the art world. 'Bus Companies are More Enlightened than Art Galleries' is a statistic of women working in differenting indastries. The name comes form the original piece of work form 1989 that was writen over with a red pen, highligting that the statistics got worse. In their work How to enjoy the battle of sexes' they wrote on top of

Sports shops intsalation research
During my exhibition research for installation methods, I went to sports shops. I found very interesting binoculars in New Balance, through which people can watch a video about a product. Unfortunately, not something I could do as a student, but it could be a very interesting way of showing an issue that is hidden and is not paid attention to. Not many people have actually looked inside the binoculars in the shop, which creates an irony of its own, whether anyone would decide

Teachers marking symbols.
I wanted to introduce some symbols in the zine to have an efficient and simple system for highlighting and explaining the issues in the articels. This particular one is from the Northwestern University website. You can find the application of this in 'project stage #9' on the 'project in practice' page. There I have created my own symbols, some inspited by, some coppied from the research, and given

We Heart: What Do Sports Pages Look Like Without Men? Katherine Burgess
Everyday for a week, she cut men’s sports articles out of the front page of the New York Times sports section. What remained were empty or nearly empty spreads, with only a few paragraphs highlighting women. This is a related work on lack fo representation of women is sport media, which shows the issue clearly. It's awakening to see a format think this showing the scale of the empty space on a newspaper that doesn't specify that it is focused on male athlets, yet the gender

The right words project
The right words project is a movement posted on Instagram with the goal to change how crime is represented by the media. They post article titles and change them to focus on the perpetrators rather than the victums. It is relatable to my project with how I want to critique the wording used to shift focus and make the titles better represent what the aticle is about.

Martha Rosler
Martha Rosler is a feminist artist, theorist, and educator. Rosler has appropriated pop culture elements such as magazine advertising and television. She created influential pieces of photomontages consisting of edited pictures criticising patriarchy, ‘in which she collages magazine photography with depictions of ideal homes, producing a single incongruous frame’ (Tate, 2026). The goal was to draw attention to the inaccurate separation of these two public discourses. I want t

Lockers Inspo- The Sports Power Brunch. 2026.
This locker installation was a tribute to women in sport at a Sports Power Brunch event in San Francisco. I want to do something similar for the exhibition, imitating lockers with different jerseys and sports equipment printed as a background, with a bench in front with make-up and hygienic supplies on it. (See project stage #10).

What if we asked men and women… the same questions? - SISTA x Mirova Forward. 2022.
This interview project highlighted the inequality that women face during their interview. Men CEOs were asked the questions that women CEOs get asked regularly diring their interviews, and they were surprised how unrelated they were, and said they never get asked anything of the sort, and it seems absured. Dr Anna Cabeca - this is awareness Another similar project had the same concept, and male participants couldn't belive that the interviewer was serious askling the question

Orange, les Bleus, VFX commertial promotiong womens football. June 2023.
The European brand, Orange, has created a commercial using deepfake VFX technology, editing the women's football game by the French national team to look like the men's game. The goal of the advert was to showcase that the women's games are just as (if not more) exciting to watch as men's. And it was very influential. It is a different format from what my project is, but the goal is related. It showcases the bias some have towards women in sport and highlights the absurdity o

London: Waddington Galleries 1998, Fax-Bak
The main inspiration for the visual part of the project is ‘BANK fax-bak service’ from 1998 (figure 1). BANK is a group of artists, who criticised the concept of art galleries’ press releases by editing and sending them back to the galleries. They were famous for the use of harsh and emotional language, expressing their personal opinion, using expressions like: 'STUPID'; 'WRONG!'; 'DON'T DO IT'; 'would be better'; 'weak'; 'Que?'; 'BAD'; 'trying to be clever'; etc. This partic
Sport Section Statistical research

PressReader sports section
Another statistical research I did was on a website called Pressreader, in the sport section of the magazines. Regardless of the fact that magazines are perceived as primarily a women's media, only 8 out of 94 publishing showen overall had female athlets on their cover, and 2 more had a small mention as a small image. Which comes to being 9% from the whole sports section on the website. The result is better than physical print books in the Waterstones, which I also counted, b

Waterstones Sports section
In the whole big Waterstones in Glades, there were only 17 out of 513 books in the sport section, either written by or about females in sport; 3 about feminism in sport. 3.31% of all books in the sports section involved females either as writers, in the title, or as main characters. It was an experiment to see what level of female representation would be in the sport section of a book store, and it reflects the overall representation of women in sport media. I am unlikely to
